What’s that?

I first see it just as the sun disappears completely. High up in the sky, above where the sun had set, is a bright white light surrounded by yellow surrounded by red, and it has a tail. It looks like it’s heading right towards me! Wouldn’t that be exciting? Wait, it IS heading right towards me! Or is it? Maybe it will land somewhere close by and I’ll be able to see it up close.

“Ziah!”

Ugh! Mom is calling me to come in.

“Look, mom! Come and look at this thing!”

“Boy, I’ve seen the sunset a million times!” She laughed. “It’s time to get your things ready for school tomorrow…”

“Mom, it’s not the sunset, it’s a meteorite!”

“Yeahhhh yeaaah, okay… You have fifteen more minutes! …Fifteen, young man!”

“Okay, mom! Here it comes!”

That thing might hit the house. But…

“Sigh.”

The light is becoming dim now. It probably won’t even make it to our neighborhood. And… there it goes… Disappeared. Gone.

“SIGH. Coming, mom!”

Just as I bend down to pick up my glasses from the grass, I hear it.

Sssssssssssssssssssssssssss, SPLAT!

“Ugh!”

The meteorite lands RIGHT in that puddle and splashes all over me! In my mouth, up my nose, in my eyes and ears, and it drenches my hair. It is hot, wet, smelly, and stings for what seems like only a second. I immediately start spitting and trying to wipe it off, but there’s nothing there. I’m completely dry again. My eyes blur, but then…

“I can… see… I can see clearly! How in the world…!” I mutter under my breath.

“Time’s up, Josiah Elijah Thompson! Let’s go!” mom says with her usual cheeriness. “We have to be up early in the morning.”
